5 steps to success for smoking cessation

Quitting smoking is a major life change.  Like getting married or starting a new job, it deserves the same thought, care, and preparation.

The truth is that smokers have inadvertently anchored themselves to many, many signals to smoke over the years. Smell is a powerful sense that is located in the primitive brain.  The same region where addictive behaviors are triggered. You may not consciously notice an odor, but the subconscious mind makes MANY decisions – even including romantic attraction – based on smell.  Familiar smells trigger old behavioral patterns.

Here are 5 things that you can do BEFORE your quit date to remove old triggers, increase your motivation, and ensure that quitting is a POSITIVE experience:

1.  HAVE YOUR CAR PROFESSIONALLY DETAILED

If you’ve ever smoked in your car, this is a MUST.  One week before your quit date, take your car to the dealership or a professional detailer and have them remove every trace of stale smoke and film.  Then purchase a product to maintain that new car smell, and use it.  After you’ve picked up your car from the shop, it’s a smoke-free zone.

2.  TAKE YOUR CLOTHES TO THE DRY CLEANERS

Sweaters, suits, coats, and jackets that you haven’t worn in months will still have a lingering odor of stale smoke. Take anything you don’t need to wear this week to the cleaners and keep those items in the plastic bag when you pick them up.  Hang a couple of air fresheners in your closets.  After your quit date, take all of this week’s clothing to the cleaners as well.

3.  HAVE YOUR HOME PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED

Don’t do it yourself.  Whether you smoke inside your home or not, hire someone else to wash, wax, polish, and shampoo carpets a day or two before your quit date.  If you DO smoke inside, take the drapes to the dry cleaners for a professional cleaning.  If you don’t smoke inside, you can toss them in the dryer (no heat) with a home use dry cleaning product for freshening.  But don’t make the housecleaning a punishment for YOU. Treat it as if you are honoring a guest by making sure that your home is clean and sparkling; linens fresh and mirrors spotless. Windows quickly collect a film of tar and nicotine, so don’t skimp on this service.  Every surface in your home should be smoke free BEFORE you quit.  After that, you can smoke outside so long as windows and doors remain closed.  It’s only a couple of days now!

Pro Tip:  If you really can’t afford to have your car detailed, clothes dry cleaned, AND house cleaned professionally, then throw a Quit Party and ask your friends to help you. Order pizza or make a sandwich platter.  Offer a fresh fruit and veggie platter and a beautiful cake.  Have wine on hand for afterward.  And make a pact to do the same for each of them when they have a need.  You never know when you’ll need your friends to swoop in, take over, and put things in order.

4.  GET RID OF TEMPTATIONS

There is nothing worse to a non-smoker than entering a space that smells like a dirty ashtray.  So once your cleaning is complete, round up all of your ashtrays, matches, and lighters and toss them.  You can keep ONE lighter and ashtray outside where you continue to smoke until your quit date.  But don’t tempt yourself by making ashtrays and lighters accessible.  From this point forward, the decision to smoke is a conscious one that forces you to weigh whether or not you want to go outside to the smoking area.

5.  MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR STYLIST

Arrange an appointment with your hairdresser immediately following your smoking cessation hypnosis. The very same day.  Ideally, it’s the first thing you do when you leave this office.  Get your hair washed, cut, and styled.  You’ll feel great, look great, AND smell great!  You want the lingering odor of smoke out of your hair BEFORE your ability to detect it returns.

YOU ARE REHEARSING FOR A LIVE PERFORMANCE.

The truth is that ALL hypnosis is self-hypnosis.  These steps send a powerful message to your subconscious mind.  You are not only celebrating your success, but affirming your commitment to quitting.  You’re investing in your decision.

Leaving tobacco behind is a BIG DEAL.  So gear up, get ready, and take action every day to ensure your success.

Picking a quit date, especially during an era when you know your inspiration is high and there will be less stretch or diversion, is by and large a smart thought.
